FAQs
Why is handmade ceramics so expensive?
This is a labor-intensive process! Each piece goes through multiple steps like wedging clay, throwing on the wheel, trimming, decorating, glazing, and multiple firings, which can take hours per item depending on complexity. Add on the 15 + years of expertise that brought me to this point. I can guarantee that each piece is its own unique work of art, which will carry more meaning than anything you buy at a big box store.
Do you teach private wheel throwing lessons?
Yes, please email me for further information.
Do you do commissions?
Yes, but it depends on whether we can negotiate a deal we are both happy with. I am willing to discuss commissions that can successfully blend the Caoyu Studio style and ethos with your needs. I am not equipped for mass production, however. If you see something you like, but want more of it, I'm happy to talk. Everything is hand crafted by me and it will take time, custom orders will take a minimum one month to fulfill, but probably more. Please email me at mail@caoyustudio.com for further information.
Why do commissions take so long to fulfill?
I do small batch work, meaning that series are limited in scope, and not high volume production. The timeline of ceramics is very particular, it involves a lot of patience around drying times, especially for porcelain, which if forced to dry too quickly, will crack and break. The wood fire process requires a team of 6-10 people taking shifts for 48 hours to feed constantly feed wood into the kiln. A normal production cycle will take two weeks at minimum, from first pull, to unloading the glaze kiln. I sell work as I make it.
